Hey Sugar, What's the Problem?

What is excess sugar doing to your body?

Excessive refined sugar consumption can affect your organ health, mental and emotional wellbeing and can be hugely addictive as it plays havoc with your blood sugar levels. According to Kayla Itsines ‘The liver stores excess sugar as glycogen (storage friendly version of glucose). If you eat refined sugar daily (above the natural sugar requirement), it may overload the limited storage space of the liver and cause it to expand. When your liver reaches its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen can be converted into fatty acids and deposited in the inactive parts of the body.

This can include your thighs, bottom, stomach and breasts. Some fat can remain in the liver and if this is allowed to build up over time, it may lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.’ That sounds pretty intense right? Over consumption of anything is bad, but given that sugar is added to so many products, you may be putting a lot more in than you expected. Even so-called low fat products are compensated with additional sugar…

And eating good fats is much better for you, but we will come back to that! Sugar is known to increase risk of heart disease, cause inflammation, diabetes and obesity, but some research also shows sugar can suppress immune function too as bacteria and yeast feed on sugar and make infections more likely (Atkins website). If you are a regular at Tiger Boe, you know we emphasise supporting the immune system as a priority for overall health. Sugar accelerates ageing and tooth decay, but even more so, pushes other minerals like magnesium and chromium out your body.

These are important factors in skin health!

Fortunately there are many things you can do to combat the ill-effects of sugar AND battle cravings/addictions once and for all. Eat protein as it will stabilise your blood sugar. Fibre rich fruits and veggies will fill you up and flush out nasties in your gut. Drink water, eat sea vegetables (Chinese Medicine style), fermented foods, get some apple cider vinegar in your diet, buy high strength chromium tablets or drink a cup of cinnamon stick tea which is bursting in chromium.

Meditate and lower your stress response. Join our mindfulness class every Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Monthly hormonal changes, Candida, emotional eating and adrenal fatigue can all send you straight to the cakes…

Tiger Boe has treatments like Moxibustion, Myofascial Release, Acupuncture and Cupping for detoxing, boosting immune system and getting hormones in check!
